September 11, 2019 - September 15, 2019

The ISHEN 2019 will offer an up-to-date, evidence-based, clinically oriented review of the latest clinical and translational research in hepatic encephalopathy presented by distinguished international faculty. Outstanding basic, clinical, and translational research work by junior investigators will also be presented.

On the agenda:

  • Pathophysiology of senescence with hepatic encephalopathy (HE)
  • Neuro-imaging of patients with HE and reversibility with therapy and transplant
  • Genetic fingerprint of hepatic encephalopathy risk in liver cirrhosis
  • Opioid Prescriptions Increase the Risk of Hepatic Encephalopathy
  • Clinical Value of Asterixis in a Large Population of Well-Characterised Patients with Cirrhosis and Varying Degree of Hepatic Encephalopathy
  • Impact of HE on brain in astrocytic, glial, microglial cells
  • Impact of extra-cerebral factors (gut and muscle) in the pathogenesis of HE
  • The contribution of the blood/brain barrier/choroid plexus in the pathology of HE
  • Covert HE vs other forms of cognitive impairment
  • Overt HE vs other forms of confusion
  • Newer modalities: new biomarkers metabolomics
  • Newer targets for overt HE therapies
  • Pharmacotherapies that Specifically Target Ammonia for the Prevention and Treatment of Hepatic Encephalopathy in Adults with Cirrhosis
  • Assessment of covert HE through the EncephalApp (Stroop-Test) based on Critical Flicker Frequency and PHES-Test
  • Priority listing for HE patients for liver transplant (LT)
  • Reversibility post-LT
  • Impact of immunosuppressive drugs on brain function
  • Gut based therapies
